Craig, I don't know how much riding experience you have but even those of us that have been riding a while goof up changing gears sometimes. You may not have shifted firmly enough and caught the drive gear between transmission gears or where the teeth did not quite mesh together and made a metal on metal noise. While this is certainly not good for the tranny, once in a while should not cause you damage. If you did it all the time you might break some teeth on the gear and you don't want that. If and when you miss-shift once in a while, quickly pull the clutch lever and up-shift a gear or until you feel a definate shift of the tranny. Based on what you described, I think this is what happened.
